In the context of modern challenges related to the need to ensure technological sovereignty and import substitution, the study of production and technological systems is becoming particularly relevant. Currently, the Russian industry needs to strengthen supply chains based on vertical and horizontal links, which requires in-depth theoretical understanding and adequate analysis tools. The article reveals theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of complex structures in industry with vertical and horizontal connections. The stages of the development of economic thought are shown: from neoclassicism to the methodology of the intersectoral approach. The advantages and disadvantages of key concepts are highlighted. The methodological approach of cross-industry balance based on matrix modeling is proposed as the most suitable tool for studying supply chains of complex configuration. This approach opens up great opportunities and allows us to comprehensively consider the structure of a chain consisting of a different number of levels and links interconnected by various methods of coordination.
