The article defines the author's vision of the essence of e-commerce based on the analysis of approaches of various researchers. Features of e-commerce development and its impact on economic development are highlighted and described. The main problems of e-commerce development and their impact on interaction of participants are presented. The analysis and comparison of existing approaches of various researchers to defining the essence of e-commerce, development problems and formulation of classification features are carried out. A classification of approaches to defining the essence of e-commerce is formulated. In the modern conditions of scientific publishing activities, there is no unified definition of e-commerce within the framework of various studies and in most cases, it is considered from the standpoint of different theoretical approaches. The author's vision of the essence of e-commerce is presented.
