The article considers the current trend in the development of the national economy, clearly focused on digitalization, which implies the need to adapt enterprises and industries to functioning in the digital environment. The main problem that has arisen in economic science in this regard is the lack of uniformity in interpretations and approaches to determining the essence of this process, which complicates the development of new principles and mechanisms of interaction and sustainable development of economic agents. The use of the evolutionary approach made it possible to substantiate the stages of digital transformation of social development: from the emergence of computer technologies to the institutionalization of digital relations. The main approaches to the study of the essence of digitalization are highlighted: technological; information and communication; reproduction; activity; Infrastructure; institutional; worldview and extended. The advantages of the digital economy as an emerging new economic model are interpreted as: the absence of the physical weight of products, its replacement by the information volume with lower resource costs for the production of electronic goods; reduction in volume indicators of production due to the use of electronic media; the speed of movement of products in the "producer-consumer" system when using the Internet. The elements of the negative impact of digitalization on the socio-economic development of society include: "digital inequality" and "digital divide"; displacement of people from the real sector of the economy, which cannot but have systemic consequences. The strategic directions of business adaptation in the digital environment are substantiated: modernization of management at the level of economic agents; introduction of new management methods based on informatization of business processes; formation of integrated digital platforms as the basis for information support of business; the use of digital technologies that allow accumulating and analyzing complex, voluminous, heterogeneous data, taking into account the growing intensity of external and internal information flows; creation of a digital ecosystem that allows business and the state to quickly and efficiently interact.
