This article examines the evolution of the concept of “innovation” in economics. The relevance of this work stems from the need to develop a unified conceptual framework for analyzing and managing innovation in the context of digital transformation, particularly in change-sensitive industries such as tourism and recreation. Based on an analysis and systematization of the views of domestic and international scholars, key stages in the evolution of innovation theory were identified. As a result of this study, the essence of the category “innovative development” was clarified and a working definition of “innovation” was proposed, adapted to the specifics of the tourism and recreation sector in the context of digital transformation. The main conclusion of the article is that the evolution of innovation theory represents a transition from a narrowly technical understanding to a comprehensive socio-ecological paradigm integrating technological, economic, managerial, social, and environmental aspects. The theoretical and practical significance of this work lies in overcoming terminological inconsistencies and developing a coherent conceptual foundation for the effective management of innovation processes in tourism and recreation.
